BlacksmithFeaturing Ken Schwartz

Master Blacksmith at Colonial Williamsburg

Join Historic Bethlehem Museums & Sites on October 6, 2013 for the annual Jeanette Barres Zug Lecture. This year’s speaker is Ken Schwarz, Master Blacksmith at Colonial Williamsburg. Mr. Schwarz will be speaking about the metalworking of the early Moravians in Bethlehem.

Mr. Schwarz began blacksmithing in 1977 at the Carroll County Farm Museum in Westminster, Maryland. He ran a private shop doing custom ironwork with a focus on historical designs.  In 1982, he joined the Blacksmith program at Colonial Williamsburg as an apprentice, and was made master of the shop in 2003.

Work at Colonial Williamsburg is focused on recreating the work environment of an eighteenth century blacksmith shop, and the production of wrought iron objects needed to reconstruct, furnish and operate the town’s Historic area.  Mr. Schwarz also contributed to the reconstruction of Historic Bethlehem’s Moravian Smithy.

The lecture will be held in the Saal of the Gemeinhaus, 66 W Church Street, at 2pm, with a musical interlude beginning at 1:30pm. The event is free for members of Historic Bethlehem and $10 for non-members. There will be a wine and hors d’oeuvre reception following the lecture and the museum will be open to all attendees before and after the event.

Space is limited; please contact Sarah Baer at 610-882-0450 ext. 10 to make reservations.
