tile.cinema-01ArtsQuest’s Frank Banko Alehouse Cinemas will showcase the amazing work of women on the screen and behind the camera lens during the Reel Women Film Series. Tickets for each movie in the series are $7.50 for ArtsQuest Members, $10 for adults and $8 for seniors and children 12 and under; they’re available at www.steelstacks.org and 610-332-3378.

The Reel Women Film Series looks to showcase the contributions of women to American cinema, while at the same time supporting local groups dedicated to aiding and empowering females. One dollar from each ticket sold for the series’ first four films will be donated to Lehigh Valley Girls Rock, and $1 from each ticket sold for the last three films will be donated to Turning Point of the Lehigh Valley.

On July 12, 7:15 p.m., see Scarlett Johansson, Bill Murray and Giovanni Ribisi in Sofia Coppola’s 2003 indie drama Lost in Translation. This critically acclaimed film gave Coppola the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, as well as the nominations for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor in a Leading Role for Bill Murray. At the time, Coppola was only the third female director to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture (Kathryn Bigelow was the fourth nominated, and the only woman to win this award, for Hurt Locker in 2008).

Other notable Reel Women films include Middle of Nowhere, the 2012 independent feature written and directed by Ava DuVernay that won the directing award for U.S. Dramatic Film at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival, and Love & Basketball, the 2000 romantic drama that marked the directing debut of Gina Blythewood.

Emmaus native Stephanie Gardner and soon to be DeSales graduate Monica Lickona will also have shorts screened before films in the series. Gardner’s If I Had A Piano, I’d Play You the Blues will play before Mustang on June 14, and Lickona’s Ella will screen before Lost in Translation July 12.
