When it comes to historical places to visit in the Lehigh Valley, there are quite a few that actually do justice to the rich history and cultural background of our area. And in the case of showing our home town’s rich automotive history, no spot does it better than the America On Wheels automotive museum in Allentown.
Voted as a finalist in the Lehigh Valley Happenings Magazine for best historical spot in 2016, America On Wheels does a phenomenal job of displaying the transportation history of the Lehigh Valley through a number of galleries featuring famous local automobiles and trucks, historical art exhibits and so much more.
Currently on exhibit you’ll find A Century of Performance showcasing a performance car from each decade of the 20th Century. In the main entrance you’ll find a world-record setting local car as well as some beautiful Buicks on display promoting the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Buick Club of America held here in Allentown this summer.
Along with the exhibits, the museum houses the HubCap Cafe, a vintage 1950’s Soda Fountain from Weber’s Pharmacy in Lyons, Ind. complete with the original tables, booths, stools, soda bar and grill. There is also a library filled with rare and vintage automotive books and magazines and rooms to rent out for events and other functions.
Located along the waterfront in Allentown, the museum is host to many events and rotating exhibits. To keep up with all of their happenings and for more information on planning your visit, head to AmericaOnWheels.org.
