VCLV LogoThe Volunteer Center of the Lehigh Valley has been connecting volunteers with the needs of the Lehigh Valley community for over 25 years. The organization’s mission is to engage the community to care for one another through volunteerism.

As the premier resource on volunteerism for the Lehigh Valley and surrounding communities, The Volunteer Center focuses on four main areas of volunteerism: Recruitment, Placement, Recognition, and Training. The Volunteer Center of the Lehigh Valley is affiliated nationally with The Points of Light Foundation, Hands On Network, and the Corporation for National & Community Service, and is a member of the following organizations: Volunteer Centers of Pennsylvania, the State Commission Advisory Board for Citizen Service, Keystone Service Coalition, United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley, and Society of Volunteer Administrators of the Lehigh Valley.

As an example of the impact the Volunteer Center has on the community, in 2012, they recruited, matched, recognized and trained 17,000 volunteers. Of those, 5,000 were youth volunteers. These volunteers saved Lehigh Valley agencies and the community more than $47.5 million. The Volunteer Center collaborates with more than 50 area corporations and 450 Lehigh Valley agencies to create educational and human service partnerships to enhance and enrich the Lehigh Valley community.

THIS WEEK’S VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY, Bethlehem invites friends, families, and coworkers to form a team for their “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K” on Saturday, October 26th in downtown Bethlehem. Registration begins at 8:30am and walk starts at 10am. Help kick cancer to the curb and paint Downtown Bethlehem PINK! Volunteers needed for registration and water stations. DA VINCI SCIENCE CENTER, Allentown needs adult volunteers for Floor Exhibits. These volunteers should be enthusiastic, curious, and comfortable speaking with individuals/groups of all ages, and working on the floor for up to four straight hours. Training provided. Hours are 9:30am-5pm Monday through Saturday, 12-5pm Sunday; must perform at least 36 hours over a 3 month period. Call Jen Pors, 484-664-1002, Jen@davincisciencecenter.org.

GOOD SHEPHERD REHABILITATION NETWORK, Allentown needs volunteers to sit and monitor the front desk and locked doors at in-patient pediatrics in the evenings 3:30-9pm and on weekends 8am to 8pm. Must have child, background, and FBI fingerprinting tests done and be 16+ years of age. Training will be provided. Call JoAnn Frey, 610-776-3125, jfrey@gsrh.org.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY OF LEHIGH VALLEY, AllentownOur ReStore at 1053 Grape St., Whitehall continues to welcome new volunteers as cashiers, sales assistants, and donation assistants.  Minimum age 15.  Contact Sandy Harlan, 610-776-7499, ReStore@habitatlehighvalley.org.

LEHIGH VALLEY ZOO, Schnecksville needs volunteers to make “Boo at the Zoo” a success. This event will take place on Saturday, October 26 and Sunday, October 27 from 10am-4pm. Volunteers should be at the Zoo by 9:30am and stay for the entire day. Two volunteers will be stationed at each of our treat stations throughout the Zoo. The Zoo will provide the treats; volunteers will provide a smile and a “thank you for visiting.” Costumes are encouraged! Call Alan Raisman, 610-799-4171 x224, araisman@lvzoo.org.

MILLER-KEYSTONE BLOOD CENTER, Allentown needs adult volunteers to serve as Canteen Attendants to serve snacks and drinks to blood donors after their donation and monitor them to make sure they are feeling well before leaving the center. Times needed are Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 5:30-8:30pm on-call for volunteers to cover vacations. SACRED HEART HOSPITAL, Allentown’s busy Volunteer Office is looking for volunteers to assist hospital staff by delivering mail, delivering flowers to patient rooms, transporting patients, and many more opportunities. THE LEHIGH COUNTY CONFERENCE OF CHURCHES, Allentown is holding their 31st Annual CROP Hunger Walk on Sunday, October 13 at St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church (corner of Ott & Walnut Sts.), Allentown. Volunteers are needed to assist with registration and crowd control from 12pm-3pm. Tasks include guiding walkers to registration table and to the starting line, working at registration table, and answering walker’s questions.
