On Sept. 16 in the Fowler Blast Furnace Room, rising comedian Monroe Martin will showcase his ability to turn his childhood experiences into comedic gold through his honest, open approach to storytelling. Known as “the Godfather of British Blues,” John Mayall has released more than 50 albums during his career and in 2005 was awarded an OBE by The Queen’s Honours list for his work in music. Mayall started his legendary career in the 1960s with his band, John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. Over the years, the group featured a who’s who in music and rock, with artists such as Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Mick Taylor, Mick Fleetwood and Coco Montoya performing in the group. Today, Mayall continues to tour, sharing his love for the blues with the world. He’ll drop by the Musikfest Café on Sept. 20 for a 7:30 p.m. show.
On Sept. 28, the ArtsQuest Center’s Musikfest Café presented by Yuengling welcomes GRAMMY winning singer-songwriter Graham Nash. A two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee (with Crosby, Stills & Nash in 1997 and The Hollies in 2010), Nash wrote and sang lead on CSN classics like “Marrakesh Express,” “Our House,” “Teach Your Children,” “Wasted on the Way” and “Just a Song Before I Go,” while lending his vocals and guitar work to many of the group’s other hits. Prior to joining CSN, he was a member of The Hollies, the British group that produced Top 10 hits like “Bus Stop” and “Carrie Anne.”
In addition to his work with CSN and The Hollies, Nash has enjoyed a successful solo career and often joined forces with CSN bandmate Crosby for recordings and tours. In 2013, the singer-songwriter released his autobiography, “Wild Tales: A Rock & Roll Life,” which ended up on the New York Times’ Best Sellers list, and earlier this spring he released “This Path Tonight,” his first new solo recording in 14 years.
On Oct. 6, the Musikfest Café welcomes The Yardbirds. Formed in 1963, the band is famed for contributing to some of guitar-playing’s greatest innovations and helping launch the careers of former members Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck. Among its many hits are “Heart Full of Soul,” “Over Under Sideways Down” and the chart-topping “For Your Love,” which peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. The group was featured in Rolling Stone Magazine’s and VH1’s “100 Greatest Artists” lists, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992.
Allen Stone began his career by self-releasing his first album, “Last to Speak,” and touring the country to promote the recording. His second release, “Allen Stone,” reached No. 2 on iTunes’ R&B/Soul charts and hit No. 9 and No. 35 on the Billboard Heatseekers and R&B/Hip Hop album charts respectively. Stone’s most recent recording is “Radius,” released in 2015. On Oct. 10, 7:30 p.m., he‘ll drop by the Musikfest Café for an intimate performance.
On Oct. 21, it’s an evening with the one and only Judy Collins. Collins’ debut album, A Maid of Constant Sorrow, was released in 1961, but it was her cover of Joni Mitchell‘s “Both Sides, Now,” the lead single from her 1967 album Wildflowers, that gave Collins international prominence. The single hit the Top 10 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart and won Collins her first GRAMMY for Best Folk Performance.
Collins experienced the biggest success of her career with her cover of Stephen Sondheim‘s “Send in the Clowns” from her best-selling 1975 album Judith. The single charted on the Billboard Pop Singles chart in 1975 and again in 1977, spending 27 weeks on the charts and earning her a GRAMMY nomination for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, as well as a GRAMMY for Sondheim for Song of the Year
