THIS WEEK’S VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES IN THE LEHIGH VALLEY

ALLENTOWN SCHOOL DISTRICT FOUNDATIONVolunteers (age 18+) needed now and throughout the summer to frame and mat student art for fund-raising activities!  Volunteers should be familiar with framing (able to cut artwork and mats with mat knife; have familiarity with basic tools/staple guns).  Workspace and a tutorial provided.  Work may be completed on your schedule.  Contact Barbara Stauffer, 484-765-4093, staufferb@allentownsd.org.

ALLENTOWN YMCA & YWCA needs help setting up, serving lunch, and monitoring activities for their Senior Health and Fitness Day on Wednesday, May 28 from 10am-3pm.  The day will provide an opportunity for both socialization and fitness for Seniors.  A mini health fair, music, free manicures/massages, and fun activities with a chance to win prizes highlight this fun day!  Call Dona Obal, 610-494-9333 x313, donaobal@yahoo.com.

CEDARBROOK NURSING HOMES, Allentown is looking for experienced fishing volunteers to help residents bait hooks, net and fillet the fish.  Dates and times are Monday, June 2 through Friday, June 6with AM sessions from 9:30 to 11:30 and PM sessions from 1:30 to 3:30.  Rain Dates:  June 9 – Jun 13.  All volunteers invited to a Fish Feast on June 20.  Call Darlene Altrichter, 610-336-5684, darlenealtrichter@lehighcounty.org.

GIRLS ON THE RUN OF LEHIGH COUNTY, Allentown needs volunteers for their 5k Run on June 5.  Assist with course set-up, parking, water stops, Happy Hair, face painting and more!  Running Buddies
(adults 18 or over) are needed to be paired with a Girl on the Run to help her through the 5k.  Must be able to run/jog 3.1 miles.  Times are 4:30pm for volunteers and 5:15pm for Running Buddies.  Contact Liz Fones, 610-682-1446, fonese@diakon.org.

INDEPENDENT TRANSPORTATION NETWORK LV (ITNLehighValley), Bethlehem needs volunteer drivers to transport seniors age 60 and older and visually impaired adults in the Lehigh Valley.  91% of our rides are to medical appointments.  You choose when, where, and how often you would like to drive.  Our greatest need is in the Bethlehem area.  Call us at 610-419-1645.

MILLER-KEYSTONE BLOOD CENTER, Bethlehem has volunteer opportunities available for Canteen Attendants (age 18+) in our Bethlehem or Allentown locations.  Canteen Attendants monitor blood donors after their donation, ensure donors are feeling well before leaving our site, and serve drinks and snacks to our donors.  Times are Bethlehem – Monday 5:30-8:30pm and Saturday 10am-1pm; for Allentown – Thursday 5:30-8:30pm and Saturday 7am-10am.  Orientation and training provided as needed based on volunteer’s schedule.  Contact Janice Brown, 610-691-5850, jbrown@giveapint.org.

SACRED HEART VISITING NURSE & HOSPICE, Allentown is seeking individuals for patient and family visits in nursing homes, private homes, and assisted living facilities.  Volunteers for bedside vigil are needed. Do weekly visits at your convenience any day or early evening.  Training of 12-15 hours is required.  Background & reference checks required.  Contact Lynn Schiavone, 610-871-5897, lschiavo@shh.org.

THE GRESS MOUNTAIN RANCH, Orefield is looking for volunteers to help our campers from 3rd-9th grades enjoy a fun-filled week on a working ranch.  Activities include horsemanship, donkey cart rides, crafts, storytelling, and more!  Campers will learn about animal care and feeding and will get to shadow a veterinarian for an afternoon.  On the final day, help with a lunch party and day of games.  Call Kathryn Gress, 610-398-2122, gressranch@gmail.com.

The Volunteer Center of the Lehigh Valley has been connecting volunteers with the needs of the Lehigh Valley community for over 25 years. The organization’s mission is to engage the community to care for one another through volunteerism.

As the premier resource on volunteerism for the Lehigh Valley and surrounding communities, The Volunteer Center focuses on four main areas of volunteerism: Recruitment, Placement, Recognition, and Training. The Volunteer Center of the Lehigh Valley is affiliated nationally with The Points of Light Foundation, Hands On Network, and the Corporation for National & Community Service, and is a member of the following organizations: Volunteer Centers of Pennsylvania, the State Commission Advisory Board for Citizen Service, Keystone Service Coalition, United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley, and Society of Volunteer Administrators of the Lehigh Valley.

As an example of the impact the Volunteer Center has on the community, in 2012, they recruited, matched, recognized and trained 17,000 volunteers. Of those, 5,000 were youth volunteers. These volunteers saved Lehigh Valley agencies and the community more than $47.5 million. The Volunteer Center collaborates with more than 50 area corporations and 450 Lehigh Valley agencies to create educational and human service partnerships to enhance and enrich the Lehigh Valley community.
