lehigh_valley_zoo1Meet our new Baby Aoudad

One of our 24 animals classified as endangered, threatened or species of concern,
our Kordofan Aoudads are part of Lehigh Valley Zoo’s Species Survival Plan® (SSP)
Program administered by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The mission of an
AZA Species Survival Plan® (SSP) Program is to cooperatively manage specific, and
typically threatened or endangered, species population within AZA-accredited Zoos
and Aquariums.
Did you know? The newborns are capable of traversing rocky hills almost immediately
after being born!

Meet our new Baby Bison
As you exit the Zoo and ford across the Jordan Creek, watch for our new addition
in the Trexler Nature Preserve. In the 1800s, Bison were a keystone species of
the Great Plains that shaped the vegetation and landscape before sport hunting
and mass slaughters of this mammal brought the species from 60 million to the brink
of extinction. In 1905, pioneering conservationists President Theodore Roosevelt,
William T. Hornaday and others founded the American Bison Society at the Bronx Zoo
to save the bison from extinction. Locally, in 1906, General Harry C. Trexler created
the Trexler Game Preserve in Lehigh County where iconic American species such as
the bison and elk continue to roam free. Born on April 17, our new Bison shares
the birthday of General Harry C. Trexler.

Meet our new Baby Prairie Dogs
Part of our North American Trail, the Prairie Dogs are also celebrating the birth
of their newest family members. Prairie dogs build intricate underground tunnel
systems, but you may be surprised to see our new additions popping their heads
up to greet you throughout the day.

habits along with other behaviors that make them wild animals. In order to provide
real life feeding experiences for the Zoo’s wolf pack, they receive prey carcasses
from time to time. During your Zoo visit, you may have a unique opportunity to
observe them feeding as wolves naturally do in the wild.
