The Volunteer Center of the Lehigh Valley has been connecting volunteers with the needs of the Lehigh Valley community for over 25 years. The organization’s mission is to engage the community to care for one another through volunteerism.

As the premier resource on volunteerism for the Lehigh Valley and surrounding communities, The Volunteer Center focuses on four main areas of volunteerism: Recruitment, Placement, Recognition, and Training. The Volunteer Center of the Lehigh Valley is affiliated nationally with The Points of Light Foundation, Hands On Network, and the Corporation for National & Community Service, and is a member of the following organizations: Volunteer Centers of Pennsylvania, the State Commission Advisory Board for Citizen Service, Keystone Service Coalition, United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley, and Society of Volunteer Administrators of the Lehigh Valley.

VC opportunities BannerAs an example of the impact the Volunteer Center has on the community, in 2012, they recruited, matched, recognized and trained 17,000 volunteers. Of those, 5,000 were youth volunteers. These volunteers saved Lehigh Valley agencies and the community more than $47.5 million. The Volunteer Center collaborates with more than 50 area corporations and 450 Lehigh Valley agencies to create educational and human service partnerships to enhance and enrich the Lehigh Valley community.

THIS WEEK’S VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

EPISCOPAL HOUSE OF THE LEHIGH VALLEY, INC., Allentown seeks a computer instructor that can help seniors learn how to do basic computer work, from turning the unit on to setting up a basic e-mail account. The volunteer would teach small groups of seniors how to use a computer. Volunteers must be able to teach seniors and be computer literate. EXECUTIVE SERVICE CORPS OF THE LEHIGH VALLEY (ESCLV) is looking for retired and career professional management consultants to volunteer their expertise to non-profits in the Lehigh Valley. Contact Bill Cosgrove, 610-504-6199, esclv@ptd.net.

HISTORIC BETHLEHEM MUSEUMS AND SITES is looking for a group of volunteers who would be willing to help us paint some of the outside of the Kemerer Museum. We would like to have the work finished by early September. Contact Jill Caggiano, 610-691-6055 x14, jcaggiano@historicbethlehem.org.

LEHIGH COUNTY SENIOR CENTER, Allentown needs adult computer instructors to teach computer classes to seniors. Current offerings include Introduction to Computer, Windows 7 and Windows 8, Digital Cameras, and Digital Photos. Classes are held 1.5 hours each session from 4-8 times per session. LEHIGH VALLEY HEALTH NETWORK MARATHON FOR VIA needs volunteers for race day on Sunday, September 8, 2013.  Cheer on runners, staff water stations and other opportunities.  Groups and students are welcome!  All volunteers receive a T-shirt.  Shifts vary from 2 to 6 hours, with start times from 5:30 – 7am.  Register online at www.vianet.org and click on the volunteer button or contact Karen DeLuca at 484-239-4030 or volunteers@vianet.org.

MAKE-A-WISH GREATER PA, Pottsville needs “wish-granting” volunteers to meet with eligible kids to help determine and grant their wishes. Volunteers may also have the opportunity to help at events. THE LEHIGH COUNTY CONFERENCE OF CHURCHES, Allentown is holding their 31st Annual CROP Hunger Walk on Sunday, October 12 at St. Timothy’s Lutheran Church (corner of Ott & Walnut Sts.), Allentown. Volunteers are needed to assist with registration and crowd control from 12pm-3pm. Tasks include guiding walkers to registration table and to the starting line, working at registration table, and answering walker’s questions. TURNING POINT OF LEHIGH VALLEY, INC., Allentown is looking for runners, walkers, teams to participate in our Step Out 2013 – 5K Walk/Run on Saturday, October 5 from 8am-1pm in the Lehigh Parkway. We also need volunteers to help on the morning of the event with many different types of activities. Training will be given on-site the morning of the event for registration and course monitors.
